Getting there

In winter the passes are patrolled daily. Ask the Pass House in Purgnar or the Office of the High Warden about conditions before crossing.

Money

The Luxfranc, Lf, 100 Shards. Euros and Swiss francs are exchanged at the Treasury window in Valdoria and at the four resorts. Most inns accept all three. See Currency.

Language

Luxian, English, French, and German. Ten Luxian words will carry you through the Realm; they are on the language page. The first is Halen.

When

The ski season is December 1 to April 15. The lake season is May to September. October is the larches. The days to plan around are on the festivals page; book ahead for all of them.

Customs worth knowing

• Leave a small stone at the shrine at the base of the Cinder before a journey and take one home after
• On Ski Saturdays the offices close at noon; do not expect the Treasury
• Every citizen has a seat at the Solstice feast; visitors are seated after the citizens, and there has always been room
• The Charter is read on June 12; the square is full and silent for it
