Culture of the Realm of Luxemburry

Luxian culture was made by five valleys that shared a language, a legend, a long winter, and a way of getting through it on skis. Everything on these pages comes from one of those four.

The Winter Solstice torch walk in Luxemburry
The torch walk on the longest night, climbing toward the Cinder.

Four roots

The Luxian language, common to the five valleys long before 1723. The legend of the Stone Heart, which every custom of the Realm points back to. The winter, which the Realm counts its year by. And skiing, which was how the valleys moved in winter, then how they raced, and is now the national sport by Article VII of the Charter.

The Way of the Mountain

The Luxian philosophy: endure, welcome, hold the hearth.

Language

Luxian, its ten words every visitor learns, and the dictionary.

Cuisine

Quormé Sabzuee, Abbguscht, dark bread, and the Solstice wine.

Holidays and festivals

The First Descent, the Solstice, the Luxian Descent, Warden's Day, First Bloom, Unification Day.

Luxians on Snow

Every child on skis by seven, free, and Ski Saturdays.

Crafts and Obsidianite

The black glass of the Cinder, the woodcarving of the March, the paper of Aethelgard.

Music and storytelling

The anthem, the winter songs, and the telling of the Heart.

The Luxian year

The year begins with the First Descent on December 1 and ends with the last run on April 15; the summer in between is, Luxians say, for getting the hay in and the skis waxed. The great days are the Solstice, when the Realm eats together, and Warden's Day, when it names its new citizens. See the calendar.

Halen
