Zevi Abselet II, High Warden of Luxemburry

Zevi Abselet II has been High Warden of the Realm of Luxemburry since March 21, 2020. Born Prince Umberto Labio, he is the head of the Abselet Dynasty, the guardian of the Charter, and the first person down Mount Cinder each December.

The office

The High Warden is the head of the executive of the Realm and the guardian of the Charter of 1723. The office is hereditary within the Abselet Dynasty. On assuming it, the holder takes a regnal name from the founders of the Realm, Zevi or Abselet, and a number. Umberto Labio chose Zevi, after Zevi the Great, and became the second High Warden to bear it.

The High Warden signs every decree of the Realm, confers citizenship on the advice of the Office of Citizenship, appoints the judges of the High Court on the recommendation of the Council of the Peaks, and commands the Mountain Sentinels. The Warden's House stands on Charter Square in Valdoria.

Early life

Prince Umberto Labio was born in Valdoria on March 21 and raised, like every Luxian, on skis. He learned on the family slopes outside the capital and raced for the Realm through his twenties, winning two golds at the Winter Alpine Championships in 2018. He has said since that he learned more about governing on a start gate than in any hall: you do not get to choose the snow, only your line.

Before assuming office he served as Warden of the Passes, the officer responsible for the high roads and the winter patrols, and it was in that post that he began the program that became Luxians on Snow.

Assuming the office

He was proclaimed High Warden in Charter Square on March 21, 2020, his birthday. The date has been Warden's Day since. By his own decree of that morning, new citizens of the Realm are announced and the honors of the Realm conferred on that day each year.

Traditions of the Warden

  • First Descent. On December 1 the High Warden opens the ski season by skiing from the summit of Mount Cinder to Purgnar. The four resorts open when he reaches the bottom.
  • The Winter Solstice feast. On December 24 the High Warden sits at the head of the long table in Valdoria and welcomes each new citizen of the year by name.
  • Warden's Day. March 21, when the Register of Citizens is read aloud on Charter Square.
  • The last run. The High Warden closes the season on April 15 with a descent at dusk, by custom alone.
