The Royal Archives

The Royal Archives of the Realm stand in Cathedral Close, Valdoria, and hold the record of Luxemburry from the Charter onward: the founding documents, the Register, every decree, and the Luxian dictionary.

What is kept

  • The original Charter of 1723, on parchment, with the seal
  • The 1723 Map and the leather case it was drawn in
  • The Register of Citizens, every volume since the first
  • Every decree of every High Warden
  • The Luxian dictionary, compiled 1904 to 1938
  • The earliest skis in the Realm, from the Cinder valley
  • The accounts of the Treasury since 1724

The Keeper

The Keeper of the Archives is one of the five officers of the Realm, appointed by the High Warden. The Keeper reads the Charter aloud on Unification Day when no new citizen is entered that year, and keeps the catalogue.

Visiting

The reading room is open by arrangement through the Office of the High Warden. The Charter and the Map are shown on June 12 each year. Copies of the dictionary may be bought at the Archives and at the Treasury window.

On the age of the Realm

The Archives begin in 1723 and say so. The preface to the catalogue, written under Zevi III, ends: "The Luxians call their home the oldest land in the Alps. The Archives make no such claim, and the Luxians make it anyway."
