Wildlife and Nature Reserves

Under Article VI of the Charter the mountains of the Realm belong to no one and to everyone. Four reserves cover about a third of the country, and the ibex of the Cinder is the national animal.

Animals of the Realm

  • Alpine ibex, the national animal, on the Cinder Highlands and the Eastern Peaks
  • Chamois, everywhere above the tree line
  • Marmot, in the high meadows, whose whistle Luxians say is the first sound of spring
  • Golden eagle, nesting on the Eastern Peaks
  • Red deer in the Western Forest March
  • Brown trout and char in the Silvershine and the lake

Plants

The stone pine is the national tree and the edelweiss the national flower. The larches of the Valdoria Valley turn gold in October, which the Luxians count as a sixth season. Vines grow only on the Aurelia shore.

Rules

The reserves are open to all on foot and on skis. No hunting in any reserve; fishing on the lake by licence from Verdian. Ski runs at the four resorts are marked, and off the marked runs the mountain is the Sentinels' business, not the resort's.
