The Office of the High Warden

The High Warden is the head of the executive of the Realm of Luxemburry and the guardian of the Charter of 1723. The office has been held by the Abselet Dynasty without interruption since Zevi the Great, and its seat is the Warden's House on Charter Square in Valdoria.

Powers under the Charter

Article II of the Charter gives the High Warden the executive power of the Realm, the guardianship of the Charter, and responsibility for the passes. In practice this means four things.

  • The seal. No law of the Council of the Peaks takes effect without the seal of the High Warden, and the High Warden may not seal a law the Council has not passed.
  • Decrees. The High Warden issues decrees on matters the Charter reserves to the office: citizenship, honors, the opening of the passes and the ski season, and the appointment of officers.
  • Appointments. The three judges of the High Court, on the recommendation of the Council; the Warden of the Passes; the Keeper of the Register; the Captain of the Mountain Sentinels.
  • The mountains. The High Warden answers personally for the passes being kept open in every season, which is why the office has always been held by a skier.

The Warden's House

A plain stone house on the south side of Charter Square, older than the Realm. The ground floor holds the office and the audience room, where citizens may bring any matter to the High Warden on the first Monday of each month. The gallery on the first floor holds the portraits of the ten High Wardens. There is no palace in Luxemburry, by choice of the founder.

The present High Warden

Zevi Abselet II, born Prince Umberto Labio, has held the office since March 21, 2020. Correspondence to the Office is received at Government@Luxemburry.eu.

No palace, by choice

Zevi the Great refused to build one. "A Warden who cannot see the square from his desk," he wrote, "will soon forget who he keeps it for."
